  17. <p>A tragic outbreak of food poisoning kills two children
  18. </p>
  19. <p>     A case of indigestion after eating fast food is one of the
  20. hazards of modern life. Something quite different happened when
  21. severe food poisoning struck hundreds of people in Washington,
  22. Idaho and Nevada who had dined at Jack in the Box restaurants.
  23. Doctors are blaming a savage strain of E. coli bacteria first
  24. identified 10 years ago. Somehow the germs infected a shipment
  25. of hamburger meat, which was then undercooked in restaurant
  26. kitchens. Two children died, only one of whom had eaten at Jack
  27. in the Box. This suggested that the bacteria could in some cases
  28. spread to people who did not visit the chain.
  29. </p>
  30. <p>     All the tainted food has been recalled, company officials
  31. announced. And they say they have changed their cooking methods
  32. so that the meat is grilled longer and at higher temperatures.
  33. Since Jack in the Box did not violate any federal rules, health
  34. officials argue that the tragedy underscores the need for more
  35. stringent guidelines in food inspection and preparation.
